Stewardship is not a subject people like to approach. You do not hear of someone inviting people over to their house to talk about stewardship. When the subject is addressed, which is usually within a church, it is often confined to the topic of money and giving. Nevertheless, the subject of stewardship is broader than dollars and church offerings.
The title steward in the Bible was given to a person that was granted total control and responsibility of another’s financial affairs and possessions. It was an honored position that was granted by the true owner to only a wise and trusted person. A steward was also held accountable.
God has granted to His children the honor of many blessings, among which are the things we possess. One must ask himself or herself if we are good stewards of our possessions whether they are great or small. Do we take good care of the clothes we wear or the car we drive or the place we live? We should because all of these things and many more are not ours. They are only on loan. They are God’s and could disappear in a matter of minutes or seconds at His will.
So, the question remains; Are we a good steward? From the every growing garbage dumps and junkyards the answer appears to be a resounding no. Perhaps it would be wise that we take a long-hard look at what we carry out to the trash and ask ourselves if we were a good steward. Did that washing machine die before its time? Was that sofa mistreated?
Of course this subject of stewardship can be expanded not only to things but to blessings. Are we using those gifts like a loving spouse, children, friends, and of course the gospel wisely.
