The Adversary and The Advocate

“If the devil comes to you and you get into an argument with him, he will beat you; for he is a very ancient lawyer, and he has been at the business for so many ages that you cannot match him. Send him to your Advocate! Refer him to the Wonderful, the Counselor! Always shelter beneath this fact: ‘My times are in His hands. I have left the whole business to Another, and I cannot dishonor Him by meddling.’ Satan knows the Christ too well to go to Him—he knows the taste of His broadsword, of, ‘It is written’ (Mat 4:4, 7, 10). He will not contest with Jesus if we leave Him to plead the causes of our soul!”–Charles Spurgeon, Sermon 2205

Don't Lose Your Mind!*

Are you losing your mind?

Take control of your thoughts. If you don't, the devil will.

The mind is the door by which Satan and this world can entice you to sin. The mind is a marvelous computer; but like any computer, it will only produce what you put in it. Put garbage in and it will kick out garbage. You must master it and not allow it to wander into places it should not enter. Avoid books, movies, music, and anything that might give a foothold to devil to work though your mind "and take every thought captive to obey Christ" (2 Corinthians 10:5 ESV). Don't lose the battle for your mind.

Finally, brothers, whatever is true, whatever is honorable, whatever is just, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is commendable, if there is any excellence, if there is anything worthy of praise, think about these things. Philippians 4:8 ESV

NOW is the Victory!

In her classic book The Chrisitian’s Secret of a Happy Life, Hannah Whitall Smith challenges her readers to settle on this one fact:
“…that Jesus came to save you now, in this life from the power and dominion of sin, and to make you more than conquerors through His power.”

The emphasis is on the word NOW. Too many Christians are looking forward to being freed from the hold of sin in the future when the liberty of salvation is NOW. Sin will always have a hold on us as long as we believe it can.

Now also in Kindle

Embrace this truth that the apostle Paul shares in Romans 6: “Knowing this, that our old man is crucified with him, that the body of sin might be destroyed, that henceforth we should not serve sin.” Start living like you are saved NOW! Enjoy the victory!

Take Heed

Then Satan stood against Israel and incited David to number Israel. 1 Chronicles 21:1

David had stood strong against human enemies but found himself weak when fighting against the spiritual enemy. Even the most strong and seasoned Christian can fall.

Therefore let him who thinks he stands take heed lest he fall. 1 Corinthians 10:12 NKJV

Be sober-minded; be watchful. Your adversary the devil prowls around like a roaring lion, seeking someone to devour. 1 Peter 5:8

Magic Pill?

Beware of being deceived into believing that Christianity is some kind of a magic pill that immures you from all problems. Christianity does not inoculate you from troubles or temptations but it does enable you to overcome them.

"The Christian life is not a constant high. I have my moments of deep discouragement. I have to go to God in prayer with tears in my eyes, and say, 'O God, forgive me,' or 'Help me.'" ~ Billy Graham

“My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness.” -God (2 Corinthians 12:9 ESV)

When you dream that the road is safe...*

Wherefore let him that thinketh he standeth take heed lest he fall. -1 Corinthians 10:12

“When you fancy that you are out of gunshot, there is an enemy close at hand. When you dream that the road is safe, there is a pitfall just before you. When you say, ‘I am perfectly holy,’ the very pride that makes you say so is an indication of a deadly cancer of self-righteousness that is eating into your very soul!”–Charles Spurgeon 1892, Sermon 2274 from  Spurgeon Gems

Pride goeth before destruction, and an haughty spirit before a fall. -Proverbs 16:18

Temptation -- Flee it!

Flee also youthful lusts
Flee also youthful lusts: but follow righteousness, faith, charity, peace, with them that call on the Lord out of a pure heart. -2 Timothy 2:22

Don’t give into temptation – not even a little!

"If you yield to Satan in the least, he will carry you further and further, till he has left you under a stupefied or terrified conscience: stupefied, till thou hast lost all thy tenderness. A stone at the top of a hill, when it begins to roll down, ceases not till it comes to the bottom. Thou thinkest it is but yielding a little, and so by degrees are carried on, till thou hast sinned away all thy profession, and all principles of conscience, by the secret witchery of his temptations." —Thomas Manton

"Lead me not into temptation. I can find it myself." –Unknown

The Question of Sin

C. I. Scofield reminds us of this sobering fact concerning personal responsibility, sin, and the Holy Spirit.

"No Christian needs to sin. If he yields to solicitation from without, or the more subtle suggestions from within, it is because he deliberately or carelessly wills it so. The Spirit is there to break the power of sin." -C. I. Scofield

There hath no temptation taken you but such as is common to man: but God is faithful, who will not suffer you to be tempted above that ye are able; but will with the temptation also make a way to escape, that ye may be able to bear it. -1 Co 10:13

Be Pure

A call to live holy, pure, Christ-Like

Ahab did more to provoke the Lord to anger than all the kings. 1 Kings xvi. 33.

HIS sin was very aggravated, largely through the influence of Jezebel, his young and beautiful wife, who introduced the abominations of Phoenician idol-worship. This is why he is said to have exceeded his predecessors in wickedness. They broke the second Commandment, and worshiped Jehovah under the form of a calf. Ahab and Jezebel broke the first, and chose other gods — Baal, the sun, and Ashtoreth, the moon. The inveterate love for this idolatry was connected with licentious rites with which these deities were served. What wonder that the land became corrupt when the fountains of its religious life were polluted at the source?

The connection between the indulgence of impurity and the declension of the spiritual life, is very close. As the apostle Paul tells its in Romans i., the men that refuse to retain God in their knowledge are given up to the working of passion; and as they yield to passion they lose the sweet, clear impression of the truth and nearness of the Christ. The first, second, and third thing to be said to young people on venturing out into the world, corrupt through many deceitful lusts, is, Be pure. Wear the white flower of a blameless life. If you cannot be faultless, be blameless. If you cannot realize all the good you know, at least refrain from all the evil. Keep your robes unspotted from the world. Then through purity of heart and obedience in life, you shall see God. As the living Christ enters the heart, He will drive before Him the brute forms of evil, overthrow the tables of the money-changers, and will sit to teach of God. Give yourself unreservedly into his keeping, that He may govern and control every avenue of your life. -F. B. Meyer, Homily

Be Alert - Stand Strong

There will always be people in your life that Satan will use to entice you to sin. Often, they are unaware of being used. At times, they will be the most unlikely people.  You must guard against such temptations and be prepared to stand strong in what you know is right.

My son, if sinners entice you, do not give in to them. Proverbs 1:10 (NIV)

Beware Where You Let Your Heart Go!

His wives turned away his heart. 1 Kings 11:4.

EVERY man is vulnerable at one point of his character. Strong everywhere else, and armour-plated, he is weak there; and our great enemy knows just where to strike home. It would have been useless to argue with Solomon for the claims of idols. He could at once, by his wisdom, have annihilated all infidel arguments, and have established the existence and unity of God. But, step by step, he was led by silken cords, a captive, to the worship of other gods. It is  a solemn warning; and Nehemiah was perfectly justified when, in his contention with the Jews who had married wives of Ashdod, of Ammon, and of Moab, he said, "Did not Solomon, king of Israel, sin by these things! Yet among many nations there was no king like him who was beloved of his God."

Let young people beware where they let their hearts go forth in love. Whom we love we resemble; and in the marriage tie it is almost inevitable that seductions to the lower will overcome the drawings to the higher. When a Christian disobeys God's distinct command against intermarriage with the ungodly, he begins to sink to the level of his ungodly partner whom he had thought to raise to his own religious standing.

Our associates determine the drift and current of our life. It is so easy to launch upon the current that flows past our feet; it seems impossible that the laughing, enticing water should ever carry us against sharp, splintering rocks, or over breaking cataracts. When we are compelled to associate with the ungodly, let us maintain a strict self-watch, and pray that the breath of the heavenward gale may more than counteract the tendency of the earthward current. -F. B. Meyer, Homily

Be Alert

Woe to those who call evil good, and good evil; Who put darkness for light, and light for darkness; Who put bitter for sweet, and sweet for bitter! Isaiah 5:20 (NKJV)

Keep watch! Be alert. The devil never sleeps. As a child of God, your testimony is extremely important. The devil will try to trick you into either calling evil good or good evil. He will try to deceive you into rationalizing away sin. Trust the Bible and the Holy Spirit to lead you correctly and keep a good testimony.

Be sober, be vigilant; because your adversary the devil, as a roaring lion, walketh about, seeking whom he may devour: -1 Peter 5:8

Be prepared for whatever...*

Be prepared!! Be prepared for whatever the day and the devil might throw at you.

Of course, you cannot know everything that the day or the devil might bring; but you can draw from passed experiences and know some the things the devil might throw at you.  For example, you know that the devil is going to scheme to discourage you, tempt you, and cause you to doubt the Lord. You also know that he usually come at you in the weakest areas of your life. If you are fearful, unsure of yourself, or suffering from low self-esteem, you can be sure these are area that will be tested. You can prepare yourself for his tricks by prayer, knowing the scriptures, and being alert – being prepared.

Put on the whole armour of God, that ye may be able to stand against the wiles of the devil. Ephesian 6:11
